There’s no doubt that moving is a stressful, overwhelming endeavor. When it comes time to change addresses, it’s tempting just to throw everything in a moving box and take your chances that it will survive the journey to your new abode intact. But you may want to move a little more carefully. We asked the best Boston moving company about common mistakes they see movers make. Here’s what they have to say:
If It Can Be Spilled, It Needs to Be Sealed
Whether it’s cooking oil, dishwashing liquid, or paint – a leaking moving box can be a nightmare. Not only are leaks messy, but cardboard moving boxes can become compromised when they’re wet. This means they rip and all your stuff can fall out and be damaged. Ideally, you won’t be moving any liquids – but if you absolutely, positively have to, make sure they’re in a sealed, leak proof container. Then, for peace of mind, put that sealed container inside another container that can capture any leaks that might just happen to occur.
Don’t Pack Your Garbage – It Makes Everything Smell Horrible
Believe it or not, there are people who pack everything they own – including their household garbage – into moving boxes. Just imagine what those boxes smell like after a long ride in the back of a moving truck! And if your boxes go into storage for a while, the stench can get even worse. While this tip might seem super obvious to you, it’s good to go over if you’re having younger family members do their own packing. Sometimes kids take the direction to “just pack everything!” much too literally.
Flammable Materials are a Strict No Go!
Strict state and federal regulations prevent household moving companies from transporting flammable, hazardous, or toxic materials. This is not the moving company’s decision to make – we have to abide by the rules! So if you have these items, it’s a good best practice to figure out what to do with them before the moving truck arrives.
