MA: Shipping Artwork Safely

July 29, 2011 by admin

Life beats down and crushes the soul and then art reminds you that you have one. – Stella Adler

Art plays such a pivotal role in our lives, as individuals and as cultures.  There’s something almost magical about the way that the right image or shape can transform how we see ourselves, society, and the world we live in.  One of the really wonderful things about the internet is the way that it has connected legions of artists with art appreciators.  No longer does an artist have to linger in obscurity just because they live a little off the beaten track.  Chalk it up to etsy, eBay, or fate – but there’s no arguing that there’s a new appreciation of artwork going on.

What is the best way to ship artwork?

When you’re shipping artwork, it’s important to remember that condition is everything.  If someone’s purchased a print, they want it to arrive pristine.  A print that is wrinkled or town won’t make anyone happy.

How do you make sure your artwork arrives in good condition? Work with a Massachusetts shipping company that has experience shipping art.  They know the best way to ship unframed art, ship framed art, and ship unusually sized or shaped works of art.  Sculptures, glassware, and wall hangings can all present shipping challenges. Customized crating is the answer: boxes or wooden crates that are built specifically to hold your items reduce the risk of breakage while in transit.

Never roll artwork for shipping.  Rolling artwork can damage the image. Instead, work with a Massachusetts shipping company that has the resources to safely flat pack and ship your artwork.  This is the best way to preserve your art’s integrity. Acid free packing materials are essential, especially for fine artwork.

You may wish to insure your artwork for shipping purposes. Your Massachusetts shipping company can fill you in on all of your insurance options so you can protect your shipment appropriately.

"I used Boston Pack & Ship to send an antique drop-leaf table that had been my mother's and four Windsor chairs that my father had made, an antique blanket chest and two large framed (with glass) photographs. I had no special instructions, but all the items had huge sentimental value - they were all special to me and were now being sent to our oldest son who had just bought his first home. So it was important that they arrive safely. Both Bill and Joe were very friendly, up front with the fees and service provided and the process went just as they described. I might not have thought any more about it, but when the furniture arrived, our son made a point of calling and saying how nice the movers had been and said that I should feel comfortable recommending them to anybody in need of their services."
