“I wouldn’t say we’re minimalists, exactly, but we don’t have a lot of things,” Linda said. “Everything we have could probably fit in the back of a good sized pickup truck. But I’m not moving from Boston to Chicago that way!”
Moving a small household a long distance sounds like it should be easier than moving a home with 4+ bedrooms packed full of stuff. Yet that’s not necessarily true. When Linda began getting quotes from professional moving companies for her family’s move, she was shocked by the prices she got back. “Apparently, there’s a minimum load size a lot of movers charge? One guy told me, “Lady, it’s not like I can drive half of a moving truck.”
Linda was resigned to spending more than she wanted to for her move, but her co-worker stopped her. “He’d moved a small load a long distance before, when he moved to Boston from Kentucky. He was the one that told me “You need to find a Boston moving company that doesn’t impose a minimum load charge!”
Based on this insight, Linda did some more researching. She found that the same moving company that handles many Boston student moves also provides long distance moves for small loads. “That makes sense,” she said. “The schools here are so good that students come from all over the world to get their education. When they have to go home again, they’re going to need to move their stuff home.”
Linda worked with her Boston moving company to arrange to move her small load a long distance. “My budget was a lot happier.” Among her possessions, Linda had some artwork. “The movers recommended the best way to pack the paintings so they wouldn’t get damaged en route. That was a level of expert service I didn’t expect but really appreciated. Turns out it pays to do your research!”
