“When I started this business, I did everything myself,” Rita said. The owner of a South Shore apparel and accessory company, Rita specializes in truly unique handcrafted items. She has customers all around the world – far more than she’d ever expected. “My emphasis – what I love to do! – is create these jewelry items for my customers. I can spend every hour of the day in my studio! But you have to sell things, and then, when they are sold, you have to ship them.”
Shipping merchandise was taking up too much of Rita’s time. “I thought, no problem, I will hire a neighborhood kid to help me.” That arrangement didn’t work out. The person Rita hired wasn’t very careful or detail oriented. “Orders were mixed up badly! The necklace that was supposed to go to this one went to that one; nobody was happy.” Worse yet, because Rita’s helper didn’t understand how to pack items carefully for shipping, many one-of-a-kind jewelry items were damaged. “I had to get rid of them before my business was completely destroyed.”
