As a package and shipping company in Boston, we see our fair share of people coming in to send gifts to families & loved ones. This type of shipment normally picks up later in the fall, as people want to be sure Christmas presents arrive in time, but we’re already seeing increasing numbers of people coming in saying things like:
“My best friend needs to be cheered up so I need this to get to her house right away!” (This package included the most ridiculous stuffed dragon you’ve ever seen, along with a stack of novels and some delicious chocolates.”
“My Mom has been painting her way through the pandemic & I want to encourage her.” (This was a shipment of canvases, brushes and art supplies.)
“My grandchildren deserve a back-to-school surprise!” (How the new gaming console will make paying attention to remote learning any easier we don’t know, but we bet the kids will love it.)
The fact we can’t necessarily see each other doesn’t mean we don’t care about each other. When you hear the news headlines about UPS, FedEx and other package delivery services being busier than ever before, it’s not only due to the increased amount of online shopping everyone is doing. We don’t have the exact data, but a certain amount of the boost in traffic is due to what we think is one of the most important, encouraging parts of this tough time we’re going through is the fact that people are still drawn to care for their family and friends. That in the midst of everything people are still taking the time to make sure the people they care about feel valued and seen and appreciated.
