“Man, I never knew how expensive moving was!” Randi laughed. “I guess being a military brat just sort of blinds you to the fact that civilians have to pay to send their furniture halfway around the world.”
Now that she’s on her own, Randi has retained the military-inspired tendency to travel light. “It’s just me, and I only have what I consider to be the essential stuff: a bed, a dresser, a couch, the TV, some cooking gear…it *can* all fit in the back of a pick up truck, but my time table doesn’t allow for me to spend a week driving this stuff across the country. And I certainly don’t want to!”
When you’re planning a long-distance small move, be prepared for some sticker shock, Randi advises. “Did you know that some moving companies have a minimum load charge? If you don’t have enough stuff to fill up the truck, too bad for you – you pay anyway!”

“Maybe some people don’t mind paying for space they don’t need or services they won’t use, but I am not one of those people,” Randi said. “I work hard for every dollar I make, and I don’t like being forced to spend it on stupid stuff. That’s why I asked moving companies if they charged a minimum load fee. If you don’t have a lot of stuff to move, you have to ask this question. Otherwise you’re going to spend way more on your move than you need to!”

“On the other hand, I don’t mind paying for services like custom crating. I may not have a lot of stuff, but I like the stuff I have! Boston Pack and Ship used their expertise to ensure that all of my stuff made the trip in one piece.”
